Natural Chocolate and Strawberry Milk

My childhood was filled with frothy and sweet flavored milk memories. Seriously delicious and truly one of my favorites treats as a kid. Sadly, flavored milk made with commercially prepared syrups and powders is also totally loaded with refined sugar and artificialness that the older and wiser me cannot bring myself to drink, much less feed to my child. However, there is a way to make this sweet childhood memory of mine a special treat for my daughter to grow up with...now that I've figured out how to make natural chocolate and strawberry milk.

My daughter's favorite thing to do on a lazy weekend morning is to make her own hot chocolate. It's her weekend treat and Alice looks forward to it each week. And I love that it promotes her confidence in the kitchen! She will pull her little step stool up to the stove, help me measure ingredients into a sauce pan, and patiently whisk it away until it's warmed to perfection. However, when summer came with it's stifling temperatures, making something hot to drink in the morning sounded less and less appealing to my girl. So, it occurred to me to make a cold version of her beloved hot chocolate with similar ingredients and a slightly different method! Enter natural chocolate and strawberry milk.

Since I was removing the heat to help blend the cocoa powder into the milk, I decided my handy-dandy blender would do the trick for my cold chocolate milk! And it worked like a dream. After my daughter sucked down her first cup, she asked me if I could make her "pink milk" too.  I thought of the strawberries hanging out in my fridge and another recipe naturally flavored milk that is easy peasy to make was taking form in my head.

So simple. So delicious. Sooooooo much better (in all ways) then the powdered or syrup milk flavorings out there! It takes a minute of your time to whip up and your kiddos will love this special treat that you can feel good about putting in their little growing bodies.

Natural Chocolate and Strawberry Milk

For Strawberry Milk

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups milk (I used almond milk, but you can use whatever kind if your family prefers)

3/4 cup chopped strawberries

1/2- 1 teaspoon maple syrup/honey or to taste

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender. Run until smooth and there are no remaining chunks of strawberries (about 30 seconds). Taste for sweetness and adjust if needed.
  2. Serve and enjoy immediately. The juicy strawberries and milk will eventually separate if left sitting for too long, but can easily be recombined with a quick stir.
